Turkish Ministry of Justice about Erdogan’s right to run for new term

The Minister of Justice of Turkey, Bekir Bozdag, announced the absence of any legal obstacles to the President of the Republic of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to put his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election, the newspaper Hürriyet writes.

“There are no problems, the nomination of Mr. President is his constitutional law, there are no obstacles to him. Instead of inventing anything, let’s compete during the election campaign,” Bozdag said.

Representatives of the Turkish opposition previously repeatedly argued that according to the main law in the referendum in 2017, the same person cannot take the president’s post more than two times. Allegedly, Erdogan was elected twice as president – in 2014 and 2018, so his decision to participate in the elections contradicts the 101st article of the Constitution, the publication notes.

The ruling party of justice and development (PSR) previously repeatedly stated that there were no legal barriers to nominate its leader for the third presidential term. The PSR indicates that after the adoption of amendments to the Constitution on the introduction of the presidential form of government in the country, Erdogan ran for the election only once, so in 2023 he can again exhibit his candidacy.

According to Erdogan, that national elections in Turkey can be held a month earlier – May 14.
