Turkey has significant potential in the field of solar and wind energy and intends to bring the installed capacity in this sector to 120 thousand Megavatts by 2035. This was reported to the ANADOLA correspondent by the Association of Green Hydrogen manufacturers of Turkey Yusuf Gunai.
He noted that Türkiye is experiencing a large -scale transformation in the energy sector. In recent years, important steps have been taken for the development of energy resources.
“The market controlled by the state began to be regulated by the Law on the electric power industry that entered into force in the early 2000s. In this context, the Office for the regulation of the Turkish energy market (EPDK) was created, which did significant work for the benefit of the country,” he said.
According to Gunaya, after the creation of EPDK, Türkiye began to use its energy resources more efficiently. Investments in renewable energy sources began to bring results.
“If in the early 2000s the installed capacity was about 30 thousand megavatts, today only the sun and wind energy exceeds 34 thousand megavatts,” he said.
One of the main economic problems of Turkey, according to him, is the deficit of the current account, caused, inter alia, the import of energy carriers. Therefore, investments in renewable energy are brought both by economic and environmental benefits, said the chairman of the association.
“Today, Türkiye takes the fifth place in Europe and the eleventh – in the world in terms of solar and wind energy power. This process should continue uninterruptedly and end in the production of green hydrogen,” Gunai emphasized.
“We have a huge potential”
He noted that in comparison with the countries of the European Union, Türkiye has more effective resources for the development of sunny and wind energy. For a successful “green transformation”, according to him, it is necessary to speed up investment in this sector.
“both the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and EPDK are actively working on this area. Today, about 40% of all energy in Turkey is made from renewable sources, which is a very significant indicator,” he said.
Gunai emphasized that by 2035 the installed capacity of renewable energy should reach 120 thousand megawatts, which will require investment about $ 80 billion for 10 years.
“This is an extremely important goal for Turkey. Its achievement will positively affect the entire economy of the country as a whole,” he summed up.
