Two boats carrying illegal migrants sank off the coast of Homs in western Libya. Four people were killed, and 91 more were rescued.
As reported by the Libyan Red Crescent, the first boat contained 26 migrants from Bangladesh, four of them drowned.
The second boat contained 69 people – 67 Sudanese citizens and two Egyptian citizens. All of them were rescued.
It is noted that the operation was carried out jointly by employees of the Red Crescent and the Libyan Coast Guard. The bodies of the four dead were handed over to the prosecutor’s office.
Libyan Interior Minister Imad al-Trablusi, speaking on July 7, 2024, said that the problem of illegal migration is a matter of “national security” for the country and that about 2.5 million migrants live in Libya.
