UK: stray dogs are sleeping

In England, it is difficult to meet stray animals in the streets. More than half of more than 17 thousand dogs found last year on the streets were returned to the former owners, and 1% was strewn.

AA correspondents in the fifth part of the “Homeless animals in Europe” collected information about the practice and legal norms of Great Britain in relation to homeless animals. The dossier is also interesting because this actual issue is on the agenda in Turkey.

In the UK, all dogs must be chipped with information about the owner. Citizens who discovered homeless dogs on the street report this to the municipality or non -governmental organizations engaged in supporting homeless animals.

According to the law, the homeless dogs taken under control by municipal employees responsible for the delay of dogs are transferred to municipal shelters, if any, or after the necessary care and control, they are sent to the organizations or associations with shelters.

Municipalities notify the organizations, about the dog found anywhere in the UK. Within a week, the dog owner is being searched.

If during this time it is impossible to establish the owner of the dog, which cannot be transferred to the shelter of the association or transferred to third parties, are euthanized.

In the UK, where almost 44% of households have pets, municipalities and non -governmental organizations (NGOs) ask dog owners to update information in a microchip when changing the phone number or addresses.

According to the report prepared by the non -governmental organization Dogs Trust, which is adopted by the homeless dogs and takes care of them in shelters, from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, the municipalities took 17 243 dogs from the streets.

54% of these dogs were taken by their owners, 8% were adopted by other citizens. While 21% of dogs were taken under protection for non -governmental organizations with shelters, 240 dogs, which is 1%, were euthanized.

In an interview with AA correspondent, the Digital campaigns of the organization “People for Ethical Treatment with Animals” (PETA), Chelsea Manro, noted that the methods of collecting stray dogs and their content in shelters are recommended. Their euthanasia in the UK is carried out in the most humane ways.

Manro spoke about the procedure for catching homeless animals in the UK: “When the municipal authorities find a stray dog, they check it to the veterinarian and check the microchip. At best, they are associated with the owner, in the worst they are placed in a shelter or loving. They cannot be kept in shelters forever, but unfortunately, thousands of dogs remain in the shelters. The situation is least saddened to us when they sleep a healthy dog. “

“We advise you to take sterilized animals from the shelters. Dogs are loving animals, they need a house, food and water. Each dog should have its own house,” Chelsea emphasized.
