Ukraine and Turkey expand economic relations

Ukraine and Turkey intend to sign a free trade agreement in February 2022, said Minister of Foreign Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba in an interview with Atlantic Council.

“Currently a number of agreements and documents are being prepared in the Strategic Council. Both parties are considering a meeting in February 2022 as an opportunity to sign a long-awaited Turkish-Ukrainian Free Trade Agreement after many years of negotiations,” said the head of department.

According to him, after the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement, strong links between the two countries will significantly increase, which will contribute to the establishment of new business ties.

Note that the task of creating a free trade zone with Turkey was still before the government of the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in 2012.

The goal to conclude an agreement was pursuing and Peter Poroshenko, when he became president.

In March 2020, Vladimir Zelensky stated that before signing an agreement on the free trade zone between Ukraine and Turkey “only one step was left.”
