UN announced deterioration of situation of women during pandemic

Over the past year, women have been at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic, but their situation has deteriorated in many countries of the world, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, speaking at an event in honor of International Women’s Day.

Guterres pointed out that women’s organizations have played an important role in supporting efforts to combat the pandemic and disseminating information about the infection, especially at the local level, and women in UN peacekeeping contingents have helped to build dialogue with local communities during the pandemic.

“70% of doctors working with people infected with the coronavirus are women, and many of the groups discriminated against on racial or other grounds, who are at the bottom of the economic hierarchy,” the UN Secretary General was quoted by TASS.

At the same time, the UN Secretary General noted that the pandemic “exacerbated gender inequality, pushed many women into poverty, deprived them of jobs and access to medicine and education.”

Guterres also stressed that women should have a say in matters that affect them directly, but so far it has not been possible to ensure their equal participation in public and political life with men.
