UN calls for “long -term reform” of migration policy in EU countries

The Office of the UN Supreme Commissioner for Refugees (UVKB) announced the need to implement long -term reforms in the EU migration policy.

In an interview with Anadol, the press secretary of UVKB Shabia Mantu said that this year about 61 thousand refugees arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, about 47 thousand of which were in Italy.

Mantu noticed that this year the number of people who go on a dangerous migration path in the Mediterranean sharply increased.

from the beginning of the year to April 30, 41,815 people reached Italy by sea, and these statistics increased by 289 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. We observe an increase in the number of illegal migrants arriving in Italy for three years in a contract . These paths are very dangerous. Many ships are not suitable for use and are very easy to overturn, ”she said.

Mantu recalled the draft UN UN to fulfill legal and moral obligations to ensure the salvation of migrants at sea and access to safe areas in all coastal states.

“UNKB UN again calls the EU countries to accept and implement the EU Pact on migration and refuge, which also consider such important issues as salvation at sea and division of responsibility. We also urge the EU to put safety and solidarity in the center of our actions in the Mediterranean and on all other ways of migrants, ”she said.

Mantu said that more coordinated search and rescue operations under the leadership of the state are needed so that migrants can find safe areas for access.

Mantu drew attention to the importance of accelerating the procedures for checking and providing asylum illegal migrants in need of international protection.

UN UN is ready to help the EU and member states in support of refugees, refuge and stateless persons, she added.
