The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that opium production in Afghanistan fell by 20% compared to last year.
UNODC released the results of a study on opium and poppy production in Afghanistan.
The statement noted that in 2025, opium production in Afghanistan will be reduced by 20% compared to last year: “This is a sharp decline, along with with market indicators, indicates significant changes in the production and smuggling of opium in the region.”
Income from the sale of opium fell by 48%, and after the introduction of opium ban, many farmers switched to growing grain and other crops.
The report quotes UNODC regional representative Oliver Stolpe, who noted that long-term efforts are needed to eradicate illicit crops and combat drug trafficking in Afghanistan investments.
