UN Is Concerned About Victims In Protests In Kenya

The Office of the UN Human Rights of Human Rights (UVKPH) expressed deep concern in connection with reports of the dead and wounded during mass protests in Kenya. The appropriate statement was made by the press secretary of the Office Liz Trissel.

“We are deeply concerned about the reports of many victims among demonstrators and police officers during the protests in Kenya, as well as the death of some protests,” Trossel said.

Trossel noted that the Office took note of an independent service for the supervision of the actions of the Kenya police about the beginning of the investigation of what happened.

She emphasized that in order to establish justice and prevent such incidents in the future, the investigation should be operational, comprehensive, independent and transparent.

The representative of the UVKPC called on all parties to calm and restraint, recalling that the right to peaceful collections and freedom of expression of opinions are the cornerstone principles of the rule of law and should be protected by everyone without exception.

Last year, on the anniversary of protests against tax reform, as a result of a police violence and during demonstrations against inefficient management in the country, 16 people were killed.

On June 25, 2024, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest against the bill providing for increasing taxes.

During the protests, the parliament building was captured, and as a result of the fire opened by the Fire, more than 60 people died.
