UN: Number Of Internally Displaced Persons In World Exceeded 83 Million

By the end of 2024, there were 83.4 million people in the status of internally displaced persons around the world. This was reported by the International Migration Organization (IMO) at the UN.

In the statement made by the IMM in connection with the publication of the “global report on internal movement of 2025” the Geneva Center for Monitoring of Internal Migration (IDMC), it is noted that conflicts in various regions continue to lead to mass movement of the population.

According to the new IDMC report, by the end of last year there were 83.4 million internally displaced persons in the world. In 2023 alone, due to conflicts, 20.1 million new cases of internal migration were recorded.

Of these, 9.1 million fall on Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The document reminded that in 2023 the total number of internally displaced persons was 75.9 million people, and an increase of 7.5 million compared to the previous year became a record.

It is also emphasized that natural disasters continue to be the main cause of internal movement.

Last year, 45.8 million people were forced to leave their homes due to natural disasters – this is also a record indicator.

Although most of the affected disasters were able to return home during the year, 9.8 million people continued to live in places of temporary stay.

“These figures are a serious warning. Without bold and coordinated actions, the number of internally displaced persons will grow rapidly,” the words of the general director of the IMM Amy Pop.
