The inhabitants of Myanmar, faced with serious difficulties due to attacks of military leadership and earthquakes, need food, water, housing, peace and protection. This was stated by the Supreme Commissioner of the UN Human Rights Folker Turk.
The Turk noted that, despite numerous crises around the world, the suffering of the people of Myanmar should not be forgotten.
“Inhibitory violence against civilians, despite the ceasefire declared after a destructive earthquake on March 28, emphasizes that the warring parties take obligations and realize the real and strong cessation of hostilities throughout the country, and also return to the civilian form of government,” said the Supreme Commissar of the UN.
The Turk emphasized that the army should immediately stop all attacks on civilians, noting that after the earthquake the military carried out at least 243 attacks, 171 of which were produced from air, the victims of which became more than 200 civilians.
According to the UN Supreme Commissioner, brutal attacks affect the civilian population, which is already in a besieged state and is exhausted by the years of conflict.
“The inhabitants of Myanmar need food, water, housing, peace and protection. They must have all this. The time has come to put their rights and humanitarian needs in the first place and find a peaceful decision of this crisis. Instead of continuing useless investments in military power, it is necessary to concentrate attention to restore democracy and the rule of law in Myanmar,” he said.
The Turk noted that 3800 people died as a result of earthquakes, and 6.3 million inhabitants of the country need emergency assistance.
About 20 million people needed an earthquake of humanitarian aid, against the backdrop of the number of needing to help, the situation in the country, ”he added.
