UN Secretary General Calls For Urgent Reform Of Security Council

Reform of the UN Security Council is necessary to maintain world order and security, and not to serve the interests of “hegemonies and empires.” This was stated by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in a video message on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the UN Security Council.

According to him, the transformation of the UN Security Council is “long overdue.”

The head of the World Organization noted that the actions of some members of the Security Council outside the principles of the UN Charter undermine confidence in the organization and threaten everyone.

Guterres said, that there is an urgent need to correct the imbalance in the UN Security Council, including by expanding its composition.

“Almost half of UN peacekeeping missions operate in Africa, but Africa does not have a permanent voice at this table. Latin America and the Caribbean is not fully represented. The Asia-Pacific region, where more than half of humanity lives, has only one permanent seat,” Guterres said.

António Guterres stressed that expanding the composition of the UN Security Council is important both from the point of view of justice and to solve practical problems. In his opinion, this can help overcome deadlock situations and strengthen stability in an increasingly multipolar world.

“Without the effective work of the Security Council, international peace is under threat, and its current structure cannot cope with the challenges. Our duty is to create an institution that can ensure justice and security for all for the next 80 years,” the UN Secretary General concluded.
