The United Nations (UN) described the situation in the Sudanese city of El Fasher as “remaining extremely dire.”

According to the organization, in the Kordofan region, about 40 thousand people were forced to leave their homes in less than a month.

This was stated by the official representative of the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric at a daily briefing.

According to Dujarric, the situation is El Fasher remains “remaining difficult” and World Food Program (WFP) staff are trying to help families who have fled to five areas around the city, including Tawila.

“Currently, 1,485 tons of food and nutritional formula are being sent towards Tawila through the city of al-Dabbah in the northern state, enough for about 130 thousand people,” a spokesman for the Secretary General said.

He also noted that clashes in the regions Kurdufan continues to lead to large-scale population displacement. Between October 25 and November 18, about 40 thousand people fled their homes.

Dujarric said that the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Sudan, Ramtan Lamamra, is preparing to visit Port Sudan and Addis Ababa next week. He stressed that the UN continues to promote “genuine dialogue” between parties to the conflict to move towards peace.

“The urgent need to protect civilians in Sudan remains at the center of all discussions and will remain so,” Dujarric said.

He also called on donors to increase support, pointing out that only a third of the $4.2 billion humanitarian plan for this year has been funded.

Conflict in Sudan

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in fierce fighting between the regular army and the externally supported Rapid Reaction Forces.

The largest city in the Darfur region, El Fasher, has largely come under the control of the RRF after heavy fighting.

Tens of thousands of people have fled the city. Videos published by the SBR show cases of forced eviction of civilians, murders and torture of unarmed people.
