The dispute around Essekibo
The conflict due to the region of Essekibo originates in the colonial period. In 1899, when Gayana was a British colony, the Essekibo River was defined as its western border. After Gayan’s independence gained in 1966, she disputed this border, which led to a long -term dispute.
Essect, located west of the river of the same name, occupies the central and northern part of Gayana. This region, comparable in size to Greece, with a population of about 125 thousand people, is rich in oil and minerals.
