Verkhovna Rada approved in first reading ban of Ukrainian Orthodox Church

On October 19, the Verkhovna Rada adopted on the basis a bill on the termination of the activities of religious organizations related to Russia.

This step brings Ukraine closer to the official ban of the churches of the UOC MP, the connection of which with the aggressor country has already been proven by inspections of the SBU and the loud revelations of the recruited clergymen, the Ukrainian media reports.

The bill in the first reading is approved by 260 votes. 15 people opposed, 2 abstained, 17 did not vote.

The document provides for amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations”, namely, the ban on the activities of religious organizations “affiliated with centers of influence outside Ukraine in the state that carries out armed aggression against Ukraine.”

For the final approval, the document should still be considered in the second reading, but today’s voting means that in Ukraine the prohibition of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate has actually started.
