Voting Takes Place In Parliamentary Elections In Iraq

In Iraq, voting takes place in parliamentary elections on Tuesday, November 11.

About 21 million voters will be able to vote for 7,744 candidates vying for 329 seats in the Council of Representatives. Voting is taking place in more than 4,500 polling stations across the country.

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) said preliminary results will be announced within 24 hours of the polls closing.

Parliamentary elections in Iraq will be the starting point for the formation of a new government. The process includes the election of a president (traditionally a representative of the Kurds, a largely ceremonial post) and the appointment of a prime minister (a Shiite). These stages require lengthy inter-party negotiations and can drag on for months.

The special early voting regime for law enforcement officers and internally displaced persons ended on November 9.
