WHO: 13 million people in Afghanistan experience an acute shortage of food

General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adkhan Goebreesus said that 13 million people in Afghanistan have an acute lack of food.

Goebreesus shared on the social media platform X information about the crisis of the lack of food security, which is faced with residents of Afghanistan.

“in Afghanistan 13 million people, which is 30 percent of the population, are faced with an acute crisis of the lack of food security,” Goebreesus noted. He added that almost 1 million children in the country suffer from serious malnutrition, and 2.3 million children from moderate acute malnutrition.

CEO said that the risk of dying from infectious diseases is even higher due to a weakened immune system of people living in Afghanistan and harsh winter conditions.

“Due to limited supplies of humanitarian aid, these figures can increase even more in the coming weeks and months,” Goebreesus emphasized.

According to him, WHO is needed to continue 185 million to continue the support of hospitals to prevent the death of an even more Afghan children and women from the malnutrition and consequences of the lack of food security.
