The total number of people who infected HIV is a global scale of 79.3 million people, the number of people living with HIV is 37.7 million people, and the number of people who died from AIDS is 36.3 million people. According to him, in Azerbaijan, the infection spreads mainly among risk groups. The targeted work carried out among these groups, according to Mammadov, has helped in recent years to maintain the distribution of HIV in a limited, concentrated phase.
Currently, 8,202 Azerbaijani citizens living with HIV are officially registered in the Republican AIDS Center for AIDS. Of these, 5 704 (69.6%) – men and 2,498 (30.4%) – women. General statistics have been conducted since 1987, when an HIV infection was first detected in Azerbaijan.
Mamedov added that all infected with the virus should receive antiretroviral therapy. This prevents the development of other diseases and extends the patient’s life. As a result of preventive measures held with pregnant women living with HIV, healthy children have been born since 2015.
