NATO Secretary General: world in South Caucasus is important for transatlantic security in general

The world in the South Caucasus is important for residents of the region, for the Black Sea region and for transatlantic security in general. This was stated by General Secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, making a statement for the press following a meeting with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, media reports.

NATO Secretary General noted that the world in the region of the South Caucasus is very important and now Azerbaijan has the opportunity to establish it.

“We encourage the peace process between the parties and hope to achieve a stable world between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” he said.

Stoltenberg also noted that Azerbaijan plays a significant role for the energy security of the alliance countries.

“It is good to return here to discuss the issues of energy security, because energy is an important element of security. Azerbaijan develops very close ties with a number of alliance allies and your country plays an increasingly important role, supplying gas and in the future electricity to key NATO countries in Europe. It is more important for the stability of our societies, ”said the Secretary General.

The Secretary General also spoke about the importance of the COP29 meeting, which will be held in Baku this year.

“This year, Azerbaijan will accept COP29. At the moment, problems can be observed due to climatic changes all over the world,” he said.

According to Stoltenberg, Azerbaijan is actively invested in the development of alternative energy – wind and sun. And this is important for the energy transition and the fight against climate change.
