South Africa dominates strain “Delta” COVID-19

Distribution to South Africa of the more infectious Delta strain COVID-19 led to a massive influx of patients in hospitals, including in the largest city of Johannesburg, and to overload a health care system, according to Sunday, The Guardian edition.

To date, “Delta” became the dominant strain in South Africa. At the same time, the Guardian indicates, on this country – one of the few in the region where intensive testing is underway for COVID-19 – last week had more than half of the newly identified cases on the African continent.

In the meantime, there is a lack of oxygen cylinders in the medical institutions of South Africa, but most trained personnel. The authorities were previously sent to the rescue of military doctors, which nevertheless, many local doctors considered late measure.

Previously, the authorities of the country banned for two weeks all massive assembly in the premises and out, banned the sale of alcohol, trips to the most affected country provinces and from them, like Gauteng, the center of which is Johannesburg.

At the same time, vaccination in South Africa moves slowly, notes The Guardian. In the country with a population of about 60 million, only 3 million vaccinations were made. The vaccination campaign is accompanied by corruption scandals, and on the weekend and on holidays it suspended, as the authorities recognized, including due to the lack of budget.

According to the statistical site of Worldometers, in just South Africa during the pandemic, more than 2 million cases of coronavirus infection were identified, more than 61.5 thousand patients with COVID-19 died. Over 1.79 million people recovered. However, data on excessive mortality can assume that more than 170 thousand people died in the country from Coronavirus. Also came the information that in South Africa COVID-19 may be infected to half of the population, adding The Guardian.
