The commander of the Armed Forces of Lithuania Valdemaras Rupshis does not exclude that the strategic defeat in the war in Ukraine will only feed revenge moods in Russia, and after 5-10 years a new war should be waiting. He spoke about this in an interview with LRT.
Rupshis noted that the military threats of the future will depend on what forces will be in power in Russia.
“In my opinion, if Russia does not change, it will remain a threat to us and for NATO. In addition, the threat may become even more, and the alliance countries should act primarily for restraint. Russia must be resolved from what it has done now “When I decided to attack Ukraine,” he said.
According to him, the ability of Russia to threaten will depend on many factors, including the influence of sanctions, but theoretically over 5-10 years, it can restore power after considerable losses that has already suffered in Ukraine.
To the question of why the threat from Russia can become even more, Rupshis said that after the continuing war in Ukraine, only strengthening of revenge sentences in the Russian Federation should be expected.
