Supreme Court of Great Britain: Julian Assange cannot be immediately extradited in United States

The UK Supreme Court ruled that the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange cannot be immediately extradited to the United States, and gave Assange the right to appeal against his extradition for a new hearing.

In a written statement, the Supreme Court ruled that Assange may submit a new appeal if the US authorities do not provide further guarantees.

The statement states that if the United States does not provide any guarantees, Assange will be allowed to appeal on the basis of violation of freedom of speech and the possibility of a death sentence:

“If these guarantees are not provided, the permit for filing an appeal will be given, and the appeal will be followed. If the assurances are given, the parties will be given another opportunity to present their arguments, and

May 20, a new hearing will be held, at which a decision will be made on whether the certificate is satisfactory, and the final decision will be made on permission to submit an appeal. “

until 175 years in prison

Assange’s lawyers and supporters who published thousands of confidential documents in October 2010, including evidence of the US crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, say that in case of extradition in the United States, he threatens up to 175 years in prison. And the American side suggests that the term of imprisonment can be from 4 to 6 years.

Wife of Julian Assange, Stella Assange, said last month that they will apply to the European Court of Human Rights if the court decides on the extradition of her husband.

The trial of Assange

October 28, 2010 WikiLeaks, founded by Assange, published 251,000 secret documents, including evidence of US crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange was detained on April 11, 2019 after he was taken out of Ecuador’s embassy in London, where he took refuge in June 2012. He was arrested for “violation of the conditions of release on bail”, placing Belmarsh in the London prison.

The court ruled that the Assange, sentenced to 50 weeks of imprisonment, must remain in custody after serving the sentence as part of a request for extradition.

December 10, 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Assange may be extradited in the United States.

After April 20, 2022, the Westminster Magistian court decided on extradition, on June 17, 2022, the then Minister of Internal Affairs Patel signed a decision to extradite Assange in the United States.

Assange’s lawyers also appealed to the Supreme Court on July 1, 2022.

The hearings in the Julian Assange’s extraction case in the US was held in the Supreme Court on February 20-21, it was noted that the decision would be made later.
