A few hours earlier, it became known that the authorities of Tajikistan began an “anti -terrorist operation” in the southern region of the country. From the Gorno-Badakhshansk Autonomous Region, there were reports of mass protests.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan said they involved “certain foreign forces that supply the rebels and ammunition.”

Earlier on Monday, May 16, in Khorog they dispersed protesters with the help of rubber bullets and tear gas, one person died, three security officials were injured.

It is possible that the downed helicopter participated in the operation to pacify the protesters and accidentally ended up in a neighboring state. The area with a complex mountainous terrain has a long border with Afghanistan.
