Russia and Belarus can lose potash fertilizer market

The sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia and Belarus, as well as the difficulties with logistics followed, can lead to countries to lose the potassium market of Africa, and other suppliers such as Canada, Israel or Jordan will take their place. This was reported by the publication “Belarusians and the market”.

After the supply of potassium fertilizers from Russia and Belarus to Africa were suspended, the authorities of Nigeria had to urgently purchase them from Canada. According to the publication, only in the current month the prices for supplying potassium chloride to Western Africa increased by more than 250% compared to the same period last year.

If since 2019, the Russian Uralkali Russian enterprise exclusively supplied potassium to Nigeria, now the Canadian Canpotex can be replaced, which is owned by the largest manufacturer of Nutrien potassium fertilizers. So, in May, Nigeria expects three cargo ships with Canadian potassium. In addition to Nigeria, Canada also considers the possibility of fertilizers in South Africa and Morocco. In addition, Jordan and Israel are interested in the potassium market of African countries, the publication clarifies.

Official statistics on the export of fertilizer from Belarus are closed, but experts believe that it is now stopped due to the loss of the Klaipeda port.
