Head of European diplomacy: Putin will have to choose between “guns” and “oil”

The sanctions imposed against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine already influence the Russian economy, their effect will increase in the future. So believes the head of the foreign policy department of the European Union Josep Borrel. This is reported by Radio “Freedom”.

According to him, one should not hope that the sanctions will change the strategic calculations of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in the near future, since he is guided primarily by not economic considerations. However, over time, Borrel is sure, the Russian leadership will have to choose between “guns” and “oil”, that is, a continuation of the war and maintaining the standard of living of people.

Borrel recalled that the EU is exempted from dependence on Russian energy resources. Borrel also notes that sanctions are limited by the military capabilities of Russia, in particular, for the production of high -precision weapons. “In order to maintain air communication, Russia will have to remove most of its aircraft to use the spare parts necessary to allow others to fly. There is also a loss of access to financial markets, disconnecting from large global research networks and a massive leakage ” – Lists the consequences of Borrel. He notes that China does not seek to help Moscow bypass sanctions.

Borrel also noted that the sanctions “are not directed against the export of Russian wheat or fertilizer”, and accused Russia of the problems with the export of Ukrainian grain. According to the head of European diplomacy, it is possible to resolve the world energy and food crisis only by completing the war, and not on Russian conditions.
