Moldova: ID cards will be issued instead of personality certificates

In the Republic of Moldova, identification cards that meet European security standards will be issued, Moldovan State Media reports.

The parliament approved such amendments in the second reading at a meeting on Thursday, March 28. 79 deputies voted for the bill.

Foreigners, stateless persons, refugees and recipients of humanitarian protection will be issued a map of stay.

The bill was developed by the State Services Agency in order to harmonize national legislation with European, as well as to continue the process of digitizing public services.

identification card will become mandatory for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova from the age of 14.

It should be noted that ID cards, temporary ID cards and resident cards will be in Romanian and English. They will not have information about the place of residence or temporary stay of the owner. These data will be available on the government platform of Mconnect. This will save the owners from the need to change personality certificates when changing their place of residence.

identity cards will be issued with a different validity period: for four years for citizens from 0 to 7 years; for seven years for citizens from 7 to 14 years old; For ten years for citizens from 14 to 70 years and for an unlimited period for citizens over 70 years.

The electronic data carrier will be included in the card and will contain both data on paper and biometric data (face image, fingerprints), as well as qualified electronic signatures and certificates of open keys. Thanks to this, documents holders will receive easier access to the services of electronic control and electronic business.

After adoption, legislative changes will enter into force no later than March 31, 2025.
