Finland will apply for joining NATO May 18

Finland may apply for an entry into NATO on Wednesday, May 18. This was announced by the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Pecca Haavisto in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Aftonblat, published on Saturday.

“On our part, a permanent representative of NATO in Brussels will do this [will submit an application] on Wednesday. If negotiations with NATO begin, a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defense begins,” he said.

The Finland Parliament on May 16 should hold debate on the prospect of the country’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. On May 12, President Sauli Ninisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that the republic should apply for joining NATO as soon as possible. The formal decision is expected to be made on May 15th.
