International airport in Ganja has been assigned a new code IATA

The International Association of Air Transport (IATA) on the initiative of the national air carrier of Azerbaijan decided to change the three-letter code of the international airport in the city of Ganja.

As reported by HaqQin.az in the Azal press service, that renaming the international code of the airport, given the scale of world civil aviation, a rather complex process that takes a long time. Three-letter airport codes are provided on an ongoing basis and cannot be changed in a short time.

After fulfilling all legal procedures, in accordance with the IATA resolution 763, the new code of the second largest airport in Azerbaijan will be “GNJ”, associated with the title of the city – Ganja. The former code of the airport “KVD” was tied to the old toponym – Kirovabad. So the city was called from 1935 to 1989.

This change will officially come into force on September 10 of this year in all airline ticket booking systems. The new airport code, including, will be indicated on tickets, luggage tags, information board.

To date, six international airports are built in Azerbaijan – in Baku (GYD), Ganja (GNJ), Nakhchivan (Naj), Gabala (GBB), Lankaran (LLK) and Zagatala (ZTU). Also in the Absheron village Zabrat is deployed by the asg Helicopter Services (ZXT).

Currently, the construction of international airport in FZUL (FZL) continues, the opening of which is scheduled for the near future. Two more airports will be built on the liberated territories of Karabakh – in the Lachin and Zanginsky districts of Azerbaijan.
