Lavrov: UN Secretary General missed opportunity to achieve a peaceful settlement in Ukraine

United Nations (UN), Ukraine must be called to stop preventing the evacuation of civilians from the military operation zone, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In his opinion, UN Secretary General Antoniu Gutherresh missed the opportunity to achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, Kommersant writes.

The minister once again said that for seven years the UN has not reacted to violations of the Minsk agreements committed by Kyiv. “To my great regret, the secretariat of this organization, including its Secretary General, missed the opportunity to achieve a political settlement,” Lavrov said at a press conference following negotiations with a colleague from Oman Badr Ben Hamad Al-Busaydi.

At the same time, the Russian Foreign Minister noted that the UN Secretary General was interested in the evacuation of the civilian population. “We advised him first of all to turn his calls to the Kyiv authorities, to demand from them to stop imposing the withdrawal of civilians from the regions of a military operation,” he added. Lavrov also stated that Russia expects that the end of the “special operation” in Ukraine will contribute to the termination of the West attempts to undermine international law.
