NATO is preparing for Russia’s attack on underwater Internet cables

Explosions on two gas pipelines “North Stream” forced NATO countries to worry about the possible attack of Russia on underwater cables, through which about 98% of Internet data and telephone traffic around the world are transmitted, writes Moscow Times.

“We had theoretical fears that it (deep -sea infrastructure) could be vulnerable, but we have not seen such incidents before these explosions in the Northern Stream,” Bloomberg quotes a senior researcher in security and defense policy in German Kristina Berzina Foundation.

According to her, now potential attacks on infrastructure under water are concerned.

Moscow can aim at pipelines from Norway, through which natural gas is supplied to the continent, or to some of the 400 underwater cables that provide communication and data exchange, writes Bloomberg.

The causes of explosions on three threads of the Northern Streams gas pipelines are still unknown. The EU called them “sabotage” and condemned them, and Russian President Vladimir Putin laid guilty for what happened to the Anglo -Saxons. The official investigations of the incident are conducted by the authorities of Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
